Nutrition is one of the fundamental pillars of feline health. Unlike dogs, cats are obligate carnivores with unique nutritional requirements that cannot be met with diets designed for other species. Understanding these requirements is essential for making the right food choices and avoiding deficiencies that can compromise your cat's long-term health.

Cats as Obligate Carnivores: Nutritional Implications

Cats have evolved as predators that obtain almost all their energy from animal proteins and fats. Unlike humans or dogs, which can synthesize certain essential nutrients from precursors, cats lack this ability for several critical compounds:

  • Taurine: an essential amino acid that cats cannot synthesize in sufficient quantities. Deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy, retinal degeneration and reproductive complications. It is only found in animal tissue.
  • Arginine: essential for the urea cycle. A single meal without arginine can cause hyperammonemia and neurological symptoms within hours.
  • Vitamin A (retinol): cats cannot convert beta-carotene (plant-based) into active vitamin A. They need retinol directly from animal sources such as liver.
  • Arachidonic acid: a fatty acid that cats do not synthesize in adequate amounts; it must be present in the diet.
  • Niacin: cats have a metabolism that rapidly degrades tryptophan, meaning they require preformed niacin in their diet.

These requirements explain why an exclusively vegan diet is nutritionally dangerous for cats without extremely careful supplementation.

Dry vs. Wet Food: The Big Question

The debate between dry food (kibble) and wet food (cans and pouches) is one of the most common in veterinary practice. Both formats have advantages and disadvantages:

Dry food: it is more economical, easier to store and, in some cases, helps reduce tartar buildup. However, its water content is very low (8-10%), which can be problematic for cats that already have a poorly developed thirst drive. Studies indicate that cats fed exclusively dry food consume less total water than those on a wet diet, even when fresh water is always available.

Wet food: its high water content (70-80%) contributes significantly to hydration and can reduce the risk of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) and urolithiasis. It is especially recommended for cats prone to these problems, neutered cats and animals that live exclusively indoors.

The current recommendation from many veterinary nutrition specialists is to offer a combination of both formats, or to prioritize wet food if the cat has a history of urinary or kidney problems.

Proteins: Quantity and Quality Both Matter

Cats require a significantly higher dietary protein content than dogs: a minimum of 25-30% of dry matter, although optimal values for healthy adults are typically between 35 and 50%. Protein quality is as important as quantity: highly digestible proteins from animal sources (chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon) are preferable to plant proteins with lower digestibility.

Foods that list generic "meat meal" or plant proteins (pea, soy) as the first ingredients should be viewed with caution. Correct labeling should indicate the specific animal species and inclusion percentage.

Carbohydrates: Are They Necessary for Cats?

Technically, cats have no minimum carbohydrate requirement. Their metabolism is adapted to obtain glucose primarily through gluconeogenesis from amino acids and glycerol, not from starch. However, carbohydrates are present in most commercial dry foods as a cheap energy source and as a binder for the extrusion process.

An excess of carbohydrates can contribute to feline obesity and, in some studies, is associated with a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in cats. For this reason, low-carbohydrate diets are gaining ground in both the prevention and management of feline diabetes.

Life Stages and Specific Needs

A cat's nutritional needs vary considerably depending on their life stage:

  • Kittens (0-12 months): they need diets with higher energy density, more protein and calcium for bone development. Foods labeled "for kittens" or "all life stages" with FEDIAF or AAFCO certification guarantee these requirements.
  • Adults (1-7 years): maintenance phase. Monitoring caloric intake is key to preventing obesity, especially in neutered cats.
  • Seniors (over 7 years): older cats may experience loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia), so maintaining or even increasing protein intake is recommended. Some senior cats develop hyperthyroidism or chronic kidney disease, conditions that require specific therapeutic diets.

Common Nutritional Mistakes

Some of the most frequent errors veterinarians detect in domestic cat feeding include: feeding a homemade diet without veterinary supervision (very difficult to balance correctly), offering exclusively canned fish for humans (high in salt, deficient in vitamin E), giving cow's milk regularly (many adult cats are lactose intolerant), or using the same food throughout the cat's life without adapting it to changing needs.

When in doubt about the most appropriate diet, consulting a veterinarian specializing in animal nutrition is always the safest and most personalized option.
